Cross in the Desert was appointed their first pastor, Reverend Ralph Smith in June of 1963. The small group was finally large enough that on January 12, 1964, the members signed a charter bringing Cross In The Desert United Methodist Church into existence,
The church met in various locations until the group was large enough to support building a facility, groundbreaking was Feb. 7, 1965 at the current location on 32nd St & Sweetwater.  As the church continued to grow the need for a sanctuary be came apparent. The ground breaking for the sanctuary was on October 16, 1983.
The founders of the church envisioned a “used church” open to community functions. We have many groups meeting here. In addition to weekly services, Alcoholics Anonymous, Al Anon, Gamblers Anonymous, GamAnon, Daughters of the American Revolution, Boy Scouts, Election polling places, Terros, Police break area, Cactus Sweetwater Block watch are just some of the groups that currently meet in our facilities.
